How Can Family & Friends Help With Relationship Concerns?

For those who are experiencing problems in their relationships the support of family and friends can be vital.

A support network can provide not only emotional support, but also practical assistance that can make a difference to relationships and behaviour change.

If you’re concerned about someone whose behaviour is causing problems in their relationships – either with you or with someone else they’re close to – here’s how you can help:

  • Check in with them to see how they are doing and let them know you’re there for them
  • Ask the person how you can best support them
  • Find a time to talk to them when they are calm and not under the influence
  • Express you concerns honestly but try to stay positive. Emphasise that you care for them, offer encouragement and reassure them that you believe they can change
  • Remind them that improving their relationships will have benefits for them and those around them
  • Listen to what they tell you without judgement. Take the time to hear what they’re saying without contradicting them or getting into arguments
  • Avoid taking sides – try to stay as neutral as possible
  • Avoid giving advice – being a good listener is enough and advice often won’t be appreciated
  • Share with them the strategies you have found helpful in the past
  • Encourage the person to seek professional help if you think they would benefit. The more support and help they have available, the more likely they are to achieve their goals
  • Set healthy boundaries and follow through – it’s not your role to put up with unacceptable behaviour or to cover up for them
  • Look after your own wellbeing – you will be a better support to others when you look after yourself
