Where Do I Start With Problem Gambling?
Knowing how to cut-back or stop gambling can be hard. Getting help and making positive change is the first step.
It can seem like a big – maybe even a near-impossible – task. But it’s possible to get things under control, even if you have a gambling addiction. People who take charge of their gambling behaviour usually notice that they have:
- Better financial balance (paying bills on time, clearing debts)
- Improved relationships with their partner, family and friends (more time with family, less conflict or arguments)
- Greater sense of self-esteem and confidence
- Improved ability to concentrate and focus on things
- Less stress, depression and feelings of guilt or shame
- Improved work performance.
To help you start making change, here are some simple strategies to manage your gambling:
- Limit access to your money, i.e. lower the withdrawal amounts on your credit or debit card, carry limited money, and ask friends and family to stop lending you money.
- Avoid going out to places that have gaming machines.
- Limit your drinking when you’re out, as alcohol can lower your defences and impact your decision making.
- Start a gambling diary to keep track of your habits and behaviour. It’ll help increase your awareness, which can help identify your triggers.
- Remember that gambling companies and apps exist to make money from you. Special offers, deals and payouts are designed to draw you in.
- Consider deleting the gambling apps on your phone or turn off notifications to remove temptation.
- Try other activities to relieve stress such as walking, joining a local sports team, spending time with friends or picking up a hobby like rock-climbing or, woodworking. Reducing stress can reduce your urge to gamble.
- Set time and money limits when you gamble, take regular breaks, and never gamble past your set limit.
- Reach out to people who can provide you with support such as trusted family members or friends.
