How Can Family and Friends Help With Problem Drinking?

Friends, family and support networks are vital for people trying to reduce or even stop their drinking.

If you have concerns about the drinking habits of someone in your life, know that loved ones can make a big difference by offering emotional and practical assistance.

You can help in the following ways:

  • Learn about alcohol misuse and addictive substance use behaviour. This can help you understand why someone may use alcohol, why their behaviour may have changed, and why it is difficult for them to reduce or stop.
  • Let your loved one know that you are available and wish to support them. Listen with honesty and compassion. Try to use statements that are positive and encouraging, avoid conversation that is negative, hurtful, or judgemental.
  • Prepare yourself for any response – no matter the reaction, try to stay calm and assure them that you will continue to support them.
  • Avoid having conversations about their drinking when they are under the influence of alcohol.
  • Don’t set high expectations – keep in mind there is no quick fix, prepare yourself for a long journey and acknowledge small improvements.
  • Avoid drinking when you’re together.
  • Be involved and invested in their recovery by asking them about new strategies they’ve learned and helping with work, childcare or household tasks that may interfere with their support program. But avoid taking on all their responsibilities.
  • Encourage them to seek professional help if they haven’t. The more support and help them have, the more successful their change journey will be.
  • Take care of yourself – do not neglect your own wellbeing. Reducing your own stress can be more helpful to those who need you. Seek help from a therapist or a counsellor if the emotional impact is taking a toll.
